 True Friendships are Rare

Filed under: Thought of the Day — lee @ Mar 10th, 2010

There are nine characteristics that we can work on to improve our relationships and build strong new ones. We rarely enjoy all nine but with time and effort we can build great fellowship with one another.

1. Authenticity – we share our true feelings
2. Confidentiality – we do not gossip
3. Courtesy – we respect our differences
4. Frequency – we make our fellowship time a priority
5. Honesty – we speak the truth in love
6. Humility – we admit our weaknesses
7. Mercy – we forgive each other
8. Mutuality – we encourage each other
9. Sympathy – we support each other

 It’s Valentine’s Day!

Filed under: Thought of the Day — lee @ Feb 14th, 2010

I’m not a big Hallmark holiday guy, but this one has a lot of history and more importantly, I welcome the idea of people being nice to each other for a whole day.

Ok, that’s not really my point. I know that we have turned this day into another silly day of gift obligation in hopes of satisfying or thrilling another person with our thoughts and actions of love and appreciation and we really should love and appreciate one another every day of the year - but a reminder from time to time is ok and this one comes only once a year.

For my sweetie, I’m writing a little note to proclaim that I love her dearly. I don’t deserve to have such a wonderful partner in this life adventure but here we are and I’m sincerely thankful.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

 Quick Thought

This is the true joy in life, the being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one; the being thoroughly worn out before you are thrown on the scrap heap; the being a force of Nature instead of a feverish selfish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy.

 Living Room Recordings

Hi there. I’m just testing to see if I can add music. In this case, it is a recording of Emily, Mitch, and Nathan in our living room. Nathan wrote “Bedtime Blues”.

How Are You Doing So Far?

Filed under: Thought of the Day — lee @ Jan 9th, 2010

We are one week into the new year. Did you create some new goals? How is it working out for you?

I have spent many years developing my personal goal system and I have made plenty of mistakes as well as some successes. I learned that I am resistant to certain changes in my life and that idea about “new habits developing in twenty one days” is a myth. It may take twenty one days to develop a new and wonderful habit, but it only takes one day to completely erase it from memory.

I’m a positive person, but I can tell you that writing and achieving goals is an art form and requires some diligent work. If a goal is to be achieved, it must be consistent with who you are (from your perspective), and you must become passionate about the outcome. In addition, every goal needs an accountability system. Today, I offer you my free service to nag you about your progress. All you have to do is email me at GOALS and tell me what you want me to nag you about. I will (privately) ask you about your progress from time to time. If you don’t know how to set your goals, let me know and I’ll send you my notes when they are ready.

My Year End 2009 Blog Entry

Filed under: Thought of the Day — lee @ Dec 31st, 2009

2009 was challenging for most people including me but like so many things, it’s all relative. We sometimes lose sight of just how fortunate we are. I can’t remember the last time someone tried to kill me – in fact, I don’t think anyone ever tried to kill me, and while I’m on the subject, I am not starving, cold, or without any basic necessity. For most of us, loss of family, health, jobs, homes, and the economy are our biggest challenges. We can deal with these things.

This year, I learned that keeping perspective is hard to do when the world becomes a series of urgencies. Still, when I take time to remember that God is first, then everything else seems to fall into place.

It is written:
And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love. -1Corninthians 13:13

When I love, I find peace.
This means to me that loving people by giving the most finite of all gifts – time – is the first priority. We love God when we love people and we show it by sacrificing our time to help, care for, listen to, and to just be there in times of need. The joy and peace that we receive by loving others far outweighs the opportunity cost of the time spent.

So, my wish for you in the coming year is the peace and joy that comes from loving people in whatever form you choose. Try a hug, a smile, a conversation, a helping hand, or any other gift of your love and your time. This is the most effective and efficient way to live. No, I didn’t learn that in business school but I’m sure it’s true.

I wish you a wonderful 2010 and please let me know how I can help you.

Much love to all,

Lee

 Where is Downtown Hammond?

Filed under: Thought of the Day — lee @ Dec 30th, 2009

OK Facebook , Twitter, and Blog following People – Hear Me Please

We are nearing the end of 2009 and looking forward to a bright 2010. To all my FaceBook friends who are in the Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana area, I want to tell you about an interesting phenomenon that you will want to know more about.

Way back over a decade ago, as I was researching development opportunities in the area and beyond, I ran across something unexpected but now I know it as commonplace. Just outside of Indianapolis, there was an industrial looking development that attracted a vibrant community of fine and performing artists. They established a wonderful atmosphere of creativity and life in an area devastated by shuttered industry and commercial support buildings. Within a few years, this community had transformed into a lively destination complete with Art suppliers, Starbucks, Artists lofts, several local restaurant favorites, and much more. It was an amazing transformation.

Ok, so how is this relevant to our area? I’ll tell you. . .

Several years ago, in Downtown Hammond, Indiana (only 20 minutes from Chicago) there was an effort to promote arts and technology in the downtown area. You may not have heard about this because it didn’t quite find its wings and the economic downturn later took its toll, but the dream was still alive in the people who appreciate this awesome urban opportunity. Well, I believe that 2010 will be the year that amazing new life comes to town and here’s why:

Even after the setbacks of the past several years, there is a dedicated group of people who are working diligently to make things happen. Projects in cooperation with the City, the Downtown Hammond Council, Purdue University, the LakeShore Chamber, and several others are beginning to happen. Yes! All this in Downtown Hammond. And there’s more - the symphony, the theater, the charter school, the lakefront marina, the golf course, and the list goes on and on.

Follow these links to see a small sampling of happenings and some of my local favorites. You really need to check this out!

Paul Henry’s Art Gallery – The old Mueller’s Hardware Store – Transformed – Art, Music, and a walk through history.

Artist Tom Torluemke – Tom and Linda have been great Hammond supporters through the artist community. Tom has done some great public art too. Follow the links.

It’s Just Serendipity – Karen has great taste. Enough said.

The Blue Room Cafe - The Vezmar brothers - Better than Starbucks!

El Taco Real Restaurant – El Taco Real is legendary. A little out of the way but you’ll be happy you came.

The Towle Theater - Community Theater at its best.

Well folks, that should keep you busy for a while. Please pass this message along and get yourself to Downtown Hammond.

To learn more about happenings, contact anyone at any of the above destinations. The people of Hammond welcome you!

I wish you the happiest new year ever!

 Christmas and the Winter Solstice

Filed under: Thought of the Day — lee @ Dec 20th, 2009

‘Tis the season for celebration of Christ’s birth. During these dark days of winter in Chicagoland it’s a good time to take note that the winter solstice has long been celebrated as a time of rebirth. The sun will reach it’s low point on the horizon bouncing off the Tropic of Capricorn on Monday to turn North again. From this day going forward to the Summer Solstice 2010, the days will be getting longer! Hooray!

 One Nation Under God

Filed under: Thought of the Day — lee @ Nov 26th, 2009

Thanksgiving in the United States was informally and later formally designated as a time of thanksgiving to God. Today I am thankful to God for my life, my family and friends, my country, and for the grace that has been shown to me through the years.

We, as a people make plenty of mistakes. I just hope that we keep God in our lives through this difficult time.

A decree signed by George Washington on October 3, 1789 entitled “General Thanksgiving,” appointed the day “to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God.”

Later, Abraham Lincoln said it quite well when he proclaimed in October, 1863:

The year that is drawing towards its close, has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature, that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of Almighty God.

In the midst of a civil war of unequalled magnitude and severity, which has sometimes seemed to foreign States to invite and to provoke their aggression, peace has been preserved with all nations, order has been maintained, the laws have been respected and obeyed, and harmony has prevailed everywhere except in the theatre of military conflict; while that theatre has been greatly contracted by the advancing armies and navies of the Union. Needful diversions of wealth and of strength from the fields of peaceful industry to the national defence, have not arrested the plough, the shuttle, or the ship; the axe had enlarged the borders of our settlements, and the mines, as well of iron and coal as of the precious metals, have yielded even more abundantly than heretofore. Population has steadily increased, notwithstanding the waste that has been made in the camp, the siege and the battle-field; and the country, rejoicing in the consciousness of augmented strength and vigor, is permitted to expect continuance of years, with large increase of freedom.

No human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who, while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy.

It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and voice by the whole American people. I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens.

And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings, they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to his tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquility and Union.

In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand, and caused the seal of the United States to be affixed.

Done at the city of Washington, this third day of October, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three, and of the independence of the United States.

A. Lincoln
